Retail Team Member (Part-Time)

Role: Operate the front desk for La Soupe, selling food products, maintaining the front of house space, providing a warm and approachable first point of contact for visitors to La Soupe, answering phone calls, and communicating about La Soupe’s mission.

Reports to: Retail Manager
Payroll type: Hourly (non-exempt)
Days/hours work:  Ability to open or close Monday through Thursday 8am to 6pm, Friday 8am to 4pm; 12-24 hours a week.

About La Soupe: La Soupe is the sole chef-led initiative in Cincinnati that bridges the gap between food waste and insecurity. We partner with volunteers and over 150 local grocers, farms, restaurants, manufacturers, and distributors to rescue an average of 25,000 lbs of fresh food weekly. Our team of chefs expertly transforms these rescued ingredients into restaurant-quality soupes and meals that are shared with community partners who feed the food insecure. La Soupe has rescued over 5 million pounds of food and shared over 3.5 million restaurant-quality servings since its inception.  While La Soupe chefs and volunteers are addressing the immediate needs of food waste and food insecurity, La Soupe dietitians, teachers, and advocates are dedicated to creating sustainable change through our programs that educate and empower communities to waste less and live healthier. Our retail counter sells a small portion of the food we make as a fundraising and outreach effort

Job Responsibilities: 

  • Operate front desk at La Soupe

    • Warmly greet visitors, including customers, volunteers, partners, donors, etc

    • Answer phone calls with knowledge and professionalism

    • Maintain cleanliness of front room

    • Feel confident greeting neighbors who may think we are a direct service provider and connecting them to appropriate resources

  • Sell food and merchandise products

    • Know and communicate effectively about ingredients and allergens

    • Understand product well enough to satisfy customers

    • Manage product with care, including packaging food, monitoring quality, accurately labeling

    • Maintain accurate inventory counts

    • Operate register/POS system. Manage back-end on a basic level

    • Be responsible for handling cash transactions and keeping an accurate register

  • Be a part of the La Soupe team

    • Assist other departments occasionally for pressing needs

    • Be knowledgeable about all aspects of La Soupe’s mission

    • Represent organization effectively and appropriately

    • Offer useful feedback on quality of food

  • No specific education requirements.

  • Ideal characteristics:

    • Careful attention to detail and cleanliness

    • Ability to engage warmly with anyone who comes in our front door 

    • Reliability to cover scheduled shifts

    • Experience in and/or a passion for food

    • A passion for the social causes at the core of La Soupe’s mission.

Compensation: $17/hour
